One of the first feature films in December that many have been waiting for, we can finally watch it this week. This film entitled Wonka is actually not a completely new title, because maybe we still remember the first film, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory , which was directed by Tim Burton and played by Johnny Depp in 2005.
But of course the main reference for Timothée Chalamet’s latest film this time is his first film, entitled Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and released in 1971, at which time the character Willy Wonka was played by the legendary actor Gene Wilder.
The latest adaptation of the novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , released in 1964 by Roald Dahl, is now directed by Paul King, who we know through two films, Paddington (2014) and its sequel, Paddington 2 (2017).
Apart from Timothée Chalamet, a number of famous stars participated in this film. These include Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Tom Davis, Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant and newcomer Calah Lane.
Wonka (2023) Synopsis
In Wonka, we will see the career of Willy Wonka, a young man who dreams of opening his own chocolate shop. After his mother (Sally Hawkins) left, Willy then went to the city which is famous for its chocolate at Galeries Gourmet.
However, the money he had finally ran out and he ended up stranded in a laundry place occupied by Mrs. Scrubbit (Olivia Colman) and his friend, Bleacher (Tom Davis).
What he didn’t realize was that these two people actually had evil intentions to trap people who didn’t have the money to stay there with a multi-layered contract that forced the person to work as a clothes washer.
There are a number of people trapped in the laundry place, and one person who attracts attention is Noodle (Calah Lane), a girl who helps Mrs. Scrubbits.
When he wants to sell his chocolate, he immediately dislikes the three famous chocolate makers who control Galeries Gourmet, namely, Arthur Slugworth (Paterson Joseph), Prodnose (Matt Lucas) and Fickelgruber (Mathew Baynton). The three of them admitted that Willy’s chocolate was really delicious and made them try to get rid of Willy at all costs.
Willy tries to find a way to sneak out of the laundry place secretly and sell his chocolate near the shop of the three chocolate makers. However, the three businessmen who formed the cartel had the support of important people such as the police chief (Keegan Michael-Key) and Pastor Julius (Rowan Atkinson).
Willy turned out to be able to sell his chocolate with his sales skills and succeeded in having his own shop. However, obstacles continue to arise, the chocolate is always stolen by Oompa-Loompa (Hugh Grant) and when the chocolate shop is busy, the chocolate is poisoned by someone who doesn’t want his business to progress.
Will Willy’s efforts to sell chocolate be successful or will he have to return to his hometown and never sell chocolate again?
The visualization and scoring are amazing
Of all the Willy Wonka rides that have ever been made to the big screen, this is the first time Cineverse feels there is a significant difference. By not minimizing its two predecessor films, Wonka is very entertaining with its magnificent visual appearance and is very pleasing to the eye.
The massive set with a very attractive artistic design, dominated by bright colors, really dominates this film, and the overall scoring is interesting to listen to and enjoy. A combination of two-dimensional graphics is also displayed in several scenes, further enriching the visual appearance.
This film seems to combine the two previous films, where the first film was dominated by extraordinary musicality, but in the second film it uses bright colors which are its mainstay.
However, it should be remembered that Wonka is a prequel to the character Willy Wonka before he was famous and owned a chocolate factory, and also before he met the famous Oompa-Loompas.
Chalamet’s character reminds us of Gene Wilder
It should be remembered that Wonka is a prequel to the character Willy Wonka before he was famous and owned a chocolate factory, and also before he met the famous Oompa-Loompas.
Therefore, it cannot be denied that choosing the character Willy Wonka was very risky. One major candidate vying for the character besides Timothée Chalamet is Tom Holland.
This choice feels very appropriate, because Chalamet reminds us of Gene Wilder in his youth. His rendition of the character of Willy Wonka is truly extraordinary and makes this film much more memorable than previously thought.
Of all the Willy Wonka rides, it could be said that Wonka is the best. The visual appearance is extraordinary, a combination of magnificent sets with an artistic side that really entertains our eyes.
The scoring as a whole is very interesting to enjoy until the end. The narrative is not boring and can maintain the tension until the end. For those of you who like musical films, Wonka is highly recommended to watch. You can watch this film in all cinemas throughout Indonesia.
